It has been an emotional post season in the NBA. Epic first round, personal highs and lows for players as well as the league.
Below are my current top five moments in the NBA Playoffs.
5. Kevin Durant MVP
Kevin Durant finally became number one in the NBA after years of anguish, taking home the title of league MVP. It wasn’t enough that he was the best player for his team this year, the philanthropist contributed to his persona of the sweetest man around with his acceptance speech. I’m sure by now you’ve all heard it but it’s worth another listen.
Who else takes a moment like this to talk about everyone but themselves? Beautiful.
4. Craig Segar’s Son Interviews Gregg Popovich
The first game of round one was missing a very familiar face and fashion couturier really, Craig Segar. He’s missing this year’s post season to undergo treatment for leukemia. As a result we were witness to a very touching and rare moment of emotion courtesy of Gregg Popovich when he was interviewed by Segars son.
Not much more to say, his sentiments are echoed.
3. Vince Carter
Vince Carter. Dunk Champion. Scorned Raptor. Under achiever? Well they certainly didn’t think so in Dallas when he nailed the game winning three point dagger from the corner, emulating the EXACT PLAY that eliminated Toronto from the playoffs years before. This time he felt was it was like to be the hero!
2. Game 7 Craziness
A ridiculously exciting 1st round had 5 of the 8 series go the distance to game seven. Of those none finished on a bigger high than the Portland/ Houston series. Game seven, Trailblazers down two points, 0.9 seconds on the clock and then this happened…
Damon Lillard not only won the game but brought his team to the second round for the first time in 14 years. Goosebumps.
1. We Are One
Band of brothers. The NBA players, owners and fans alike showed the world what it’s like to stand for something and to do it as one. Donald Sterling is now the league pariah and in the process of his alienation we saw the humanization of superstars, vast integrity and solidarity on display in the NBA.
The Clippers lead the movement, which was mirrored by Miami. Ex-head coach Mark Jackson urged fans to miss games in protest (I’m pretty sure they called him Jacobson?), and many teams donned black socks in another version of the silent protest. The NBA moved quickly to banishing Sterling into oblivion, which was another glorious moment in the post season.
