The Cowboys were so, Cowboys… again

Dez Bryant’s meltdown is the discussion of football weekend right now. Or Stafford’s last second score. Or the Cowboys losing by a single point. Yes, that is so Cowboys. Either way the topic is Cowboys, and after losing another very emotional game I think it’s time to look closely at the ‘Boys. (ew not like that, geez, get your mind out of the gutter).
The Cowboys are the leader of their division with 4 wins and 4 losses. The Eagles are a point behind them with the Redskins and Giants 2 points back. I think it’s safe to say at this point that the division is theirs. The Redskins are struggling. The Giants are the worst despite winning Sunday against the possible worse Eagles. With Foles out with a concussion and Vick hearing his hamstring pop the Eagles shouldn’t give the Cowboys a run for their money. Even if they are feeling nice and cozy in the NFC East they have to prepare for the harsh reality of the rest of the league. Next week should be an easy win over the Vikings, but then they face New Orleans, which will be a tough game for them.
The Cowboys should have won that game in Detroit. They blew a 10 point lead when there was less than 4 minutes left AND they had the Lions’ four turnovers on their side. The Cowboys gave up 24 points in the fourth quarter. Oh, and Calvin Johnson set a record, and well, the Boys fell apart in a crucial moment-again. The crazy thing was that each of those turnovers were in ‘Boys territory and things could have been very different instead of being as close as it was.
What happened?
Despite the Dez Bryant freak out, Dez is playing well. He shouldn’t have had that tantrum; but he is their best player. He is. I can’t say the same for Terrence Williams. Williams only caught 2 catches out of the ten he was thrown. Yes, he had that touchdown but he wasn’t playing well enough to be the number 2 receiver for the Cowboys. I think part of the reason that Dez was freaking out was that he wasn’t targeted more. Romo was playing cautiously and seemed unwilling to throw in double coverage to Dez. This cautious play is helping Romo not rack up interceptions, but his efficiency is down. He has the worse efficiency ratings this season of his entire career. Additionally, Romo is ditching the ball faster (2.69 seconds) which you would think would help his efficiency ratings.. The run game was, well, horrid. Of course, with DeMarco Murray out with an injury this was expected to happen. Rookie running back Joseph Randle is averaging 2.45 yards per carry. He must be good friends with Trent Richardson. Defensively, the Cowboys are hurting. They were without DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer and Tyrone Crawford-at once. George Selvie has been picking up slack. Corner back Brandon Carr was decimated by Calvin Johnson. 329 yards. The ‘Boys couldn’t finish up defensively. With one minute left Durham caught a 40 yard pass that changed the game in the Lion’s favor.
If the Cowboys are going to break from their 8-8 past they need to dig deep. The NFC East is a fine place to lose it in the 4th, but the rest of the league will not be so forgiving.
