GOSSIP CORNER: How to Strike a Wrong Chord with Rob Gronkowski

Ever have an athlete just strike a wrong chord with you…forever ruining your respect for them as a professional athlete? Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots, has done that time and time again with me.

Each time he appears in the media, I typically cringe.

However, not this time.

He is the highest paid tight-end in NFL history with a $54 million contract over six years. Though, he’s spent the off-season recoveries from surgeries due to injury. He and his family sat down with CBS This Morning to discuss the secret behind a family groomed to be athletes. Rob has two other brothers who play for the NFL, Chris Gronkowski with the San Diego Chargers, and Dan Gronkowski with the Cleveland Browns, another who played professional baseball and the youngest brother, Glenn Gronkowski, who will be playing for Kansas State this season and hoping to carry on the tradition.

But when asked about teammate, former tight end, Aaron Hernandez, who has recently been charged with first-degree murder, he simply says, “next question.’ Interviewer Don Dahler asks again in a different form and gets the same response. When Dahler tried to divert the question to his father Gordie, Rob gets up threatening to end the interview in regard to that topic. The family honestly had to expect this question was coming. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the network set up the interview as a sideways way of getting the normally outspoken Rob to comment on the issue.

Well, it didn’t work.

And I’m pretty impressed, and have to say “well done.” To comment on such a sensitive issue with a pending trial would be downright stupid.
But, like I said, I’ve not been impressed with Rob’s decision-making skills when in the public eye. So maybe the guy has a brain after all.

Opinion slowly shifting, but we’ll see.

What are your thoughts?
