3rd & 10: Johnny Manziel-The Trouble Maker?

The Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel is ensconced in rumours once again. This is a Hiesman trophy winner who is already being predicted as the number one draft pick for the NFL draft. He’s a talent that many in the football world respect. Yet, the 20-year-old didn’t make it through the Manning Passing Academy this past weekend. What exactly happened?

The official statement was released by the Manning Academy:

Johnny Manziel did participate in some activities in the 2013 Manning Passing Academy as a college counselor/coach. After missing and being late for practice assignments, Johnny explained that he had been feeling ill. Consequently, we agreed that it was in everyone’s best interest for him to go home a day early.

Johnny had missed some meetings and practice session. The statement, as well as Johnny’s father, says that the young quarterback was feeling ill. His father said that his son was suffering from dehydration which caused him to feel ill. His father says Johnny is now recuperating at home. You know, dehydration can really fuck you up.

The rumors are a completely different story. The rumor is that Manziel was out late the night before partying. He missed sessions in the morning and was reportedly asked to leave as a counselor. Busted Coverage posted several photos of Manziel at a bar in the area. However, Eli Manning and several others from the Academy were also there. Sources have reported that he was indeed out late partying and that his illness was from partying.

However, here’s the thing. He is a 20-year-old college kid who went out on a Saturday night. Why he left the Manning Academy has not been confirmed but can the public really be upset over this possible behavior? It was not before a big game, his absence didn’t stop the running of the Academy and it appears that the Mannings’ are not upset. He is a kid who is allowed to live his life, especially in the offseason. It’s not like he missed the morning from doing yards of blow, or you know, murdering a friend, or flipping his car over while drinking and well, murdering his friend. Manziel does have to have a certain limit of awareness about his very public life, but the public also needs to put some context in their judgments. He is not a bad kid, and besides, I bet over half those haters used a sick day on a hangover too.
