49ers Land First Super Bowl Since 1985

The San Francisco 49ers might not actually have a new stadium just yet, but they will soon. The NFL awarded the franchise the league’s 50th Super Bowl in 2016 this week, giving them a shot to host the major event.

After losing the latest Super Bowl to the Baltimore Ravens by two points, the 49ers are still on the rise as one of the most talented teams in the NFL. Kaepernick has the potential to be the top QB by 2016 and having the prospect of a home stadium Super Bowl could give him an edge that it would be hard to ignore in the fantasy football draft that year. There is history on their side too, as the last time the big game was played in the area, the 49ers took on the Miami Dolphins at Stanford Stadium. Although the game was not technically a home event for the 49ers, they had a distinctive advantage with it being played in their backyard.

More importantly, the 2016 Super Bowl will be the 50th anniversary of the game. As is the case with nearly any milestone, the significance of this event will stand out even more with the nice, clean Super Bowl L logo.

San Francisco was able to hold off the Miami area for the 2016 bid, thanks in large part to Sun Life Stadium failing to secure enough money for some renovations to the stadium. The uncertainty has even sparked the thought that the Dolphins could relocate if the issue is not solved. While there are some concerns about the sometimes unpredictable weather in Northern California during February, the NFL is more opened to this type of setup, already awarding the New York City area with the 2014 game.

Levi’s Stadium is expected to be ready for the start of the 2014 NFL season. Along with being the home field of the 49ers, the stadium will also host the annual Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in college football.
