3rd & 10: Randy Moss Needs a Reality Check

News broke this weekend that Randy Moss will not be staying with the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers have decided not to bring him back for the new season.

The 36-year-old came out of retirement to play with the 49ers. Before he retired in the 2010-2011 season he had played for three teams and only recorded 393 receiving yards in 16 games.

One would think that it was time for Moss to go back into retirement. Yet, reportedly he would like to return for one more season. Mike Freeman of CBS Sports reported that Moss wants to play for a “contending team” this season.

Putting aside what Moss may want, what “contending” team would want him?
Randy Moss will be in the hall of fame some day, but it isn’t for his current performance on the field. Last season he made 28 receptions for 434 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was not a major part of San Francisco’s run to the Super Bowl this past season. He did pick up some extra snaps; but this was only due to Mario Manningham and Kyle Williams injuries. There is not a lot of room on team’s rosters for a wide receiver that cannot play regular snaps, or at the very least make up for it by contributing on special teams, which is why you may want to keep up with the latest NFL news and rumors to see how things exactly will play out for Moss.

Not to mention that a coach would be taking a big risk by signing Moss. He has behaved himself in the last season, but he is not known as being a model teammate. Additionally, there is no guarantee that he can play well enough to benefit a team. Taking both these issues into account it does not seem possible that a ‘contender’ would want to sign him.

We all know that Randy Moss is a very talented wide receiver, but he does not have it in him to play one more season, with a contending team or not.
