The Super Bowl was everything you could have asked for; comebacks, close calls and hair whipping(that was a lot of whipping, no?) There was even a nifty power outage. Oh, and of course there was controversy.
After what appeared to be a Ravens game the 49ers orchestrated a comeback that almost upset (righted?) the entire game. Kaepernick had just floated a pass to Crabtree with 1:50 left on the clock in the 4th quarter. Crabtree made for the deep right corner but never made it as Smith and him got tangled near the goal line.
The problem is that the tangle involved a wee bit of holding.
Smith locks both his hands around Crabtree as they are near the end zone. Crabtree never makes it as he attempting to wrestle Smith off. Yet the refs did not call for defensive holding or pass interference
Most sports analysts, and Jim Harbaugh, are calling it a missed penalty. The other side of the argument is that there was offensive pass interference as well and the two fouls cancel each other out. The duel fouls would be why the refs did not throw a flag.
Either way this play will go down in history as something that could have changed everything. It seems all too fitting that the season ends much the way the season began with another controversy involving referees.
Do you think there should have been a call?
