Tony Finau was the final pick by United States captain Jim Furyk to join the Ryder Cup team.
“There won’t be any locker room noise with me,” Finau said, according to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). “I can play with anyone. I feel that my personality is just that way. I can bring the best out of different guys playing with them, and them the same to me. I’m pretty easy to play with. And I’m playing some good golf, some world-class golf.”
“He has an unbelievable body of work this year,” Furyk said. “All those top-10 finishes, the play in big championships and the majors, and then his current form, a second, a fourth and an eighth in the playoffs. He checked a lot of boxes and made it impossible not to pick him.”
“I never thought I was on that team until I got that call,” Finau said. “I made sure I played that way; I played like I always had something to prove. And I let the guys on the team know that I’d be a great pick and I’d be ready to go. It’s definitely cool to accomplish something like this and to be able to play as well as I have under the circumstances, it’s something I’m extremely proud of.”
Tiger Woods’ Rally at BMW Championship Falls Short
Tiger Woods may not be walking away with his first golf tournament win in five years, but he put on a show in a spirited rally during the final round to build momentum ahead of the season-ending Tour Championship.
Woods carded a five-under 65 in the final round of the 2018 BMW Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, going into the clubhouse at 17 under for the tournament in a tie for fifth place, in a remarkable showing that flashed a return to form for the former Number 1 player.
“I’m going to have to shoot one of those 61s or 62s just to have a chance,” Woods said, according to ESPN. “The golf course is soft. Everyone is making birdies. You can be aggressive. I got to take a run at it.”
Now Woods turns his focus to the Tour Championship, which he qualified for, that starts on September 19th at East Lake Golf Club.
Tiger Woods Shoots 3 Under on Saturday
Tiger Woods is building momentum, putting out his best showing at the 2018 Northern Trust on Saturday with a three-under 68 in the third round.
Woods posted consecutive rounds of 71 and he needed to post a low number to get near the top of the leaderboard heading into the final day, and while it didn’t pan out for Woods, the improvement was impossible to ignore.
“The name of the game is you’ve got to make putts and you’ve got to roll it,” Woods said after the second round, according to ESPN. “No matter how good your drive is, you’ve still got to roll them and still got to make putts, and I didn’t putt very well today. I had a hard time seeing my lines, and consequently, I didn’t make anything.”
Currently, Woods leads the PGA Tour with a 68.42 scoring average in the third round, and average that ranges from 46th to 133rd in the other three rounds.
“For the week, I’ve only made eight [actually seven] birdies, and that’s not going to get it done,” Woods said. “These guys are making a boatload of birdies, and as soft as it is, I just haven’t made any.”
Paul Waring Wins Nordea Masters, Collects First European Tour Title
Paul Waring defeated Thomas Aiken in a play-off to win the Nordea Masters title, his first European Tour title at the 200th attempt.
“I’m obviously ecstatic. I wasn’t ever sure this day would come in total honesty,” said Waring, according to ESPN. “I’ve tried so hard for many years to get to this point and it’s nice to finally get across the line and be holding the trophy.
“It wasn’t easy. I felt really in control though. I’ve made a few swing changes so I was kind of allowing myself to hit some bad shots now and again, so I wasn’t getting too wound up in where the ball was going.”
Waring, 33, has struggled with injuries throughout his career, so the win is extra gratifying considering all that he has overcome.
“It feels like it’s all worth it. I’ve had a couple of operations along the way and it’s nice to have finally got to this point and I’m sure everyone back home will be absolutely thrilled for me.
“I’ve got a great team around me so this is all for them as well.”
