Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson, the number 1 pick in the draft and college player of the year, became the unanimous choice for WNBA Rookie of the Year.

“It means a lot with that rookie class,” Wilson said. “There are so many great players.”

Although the Aces struggled this season to a 14-20 record, Wilson was a star, and averaged 20.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.67 blocked shots and her scoring average was second all time by a WNBA rookie, to Seimone Augustus’ 21.9 PPG rookie campaign back in 2006.

Argonauts Hire Mike (Pinball) Clemons as General Manager

The Toronto Argonauts are bringing in one of the biggest names in CFL history to replace Jim Popp as their General Manager.

Mike ‘Pinball’ Clemons.

Clemons is a former star for the Argonauts on the field, a former head coach, and a former executive with the franchise, so he has a uniquely deep understanding of the team in a number of areas.

The Argos are in the midst of a terrible 2-12 season, following up a bad 4-14 record from last season, so a big change is long overdue and they feel that Clemons can help bring about the change that they need.

Argos president Bill Manning enlisted Clemons’ help last month in an advisory role and Clemons been vice chair of the team since 2009, saying that he turned down a front-office role with the Argos twice earlier this season before agreeing to the position after Saturday’s game.

“I didn’t need a job, I have a wonderful (charitable) foundation I love,” Clemons said, according to TSN.

“I make a living talking to people. I talk and they pay me. I’m not in this job because I need a job. I’ve got a bunch of jobs. I’m here because I love it and I care about our fan base. We want to make it better.”

Clemons knows that building a roster of the right players will be the key to his success.

“It’s not an I thing. If it’s me, this can’t be done,” Clemons said. “We’re going to build a strong, capable team around us. That’s only way we’re going to have any success.”

With the change, Clemons knows that addressing the quarterback position will be high on his priority list.

“We have to build a strong team, no question about that,” Clemons said. “But ultimately, you can’t disguise the importance of that position.”

Now, Clemons takes on the task of turning around a team that has been stuck in a rut and in need of change for the past few years.

Roger Federer, Daniil Medvedev Advance to Third Round of Shanghai Masters

Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev both reached the third round of the Shanghai Masters on Tuesday.

The second seeded Federer defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-2, 7-6 (5), and didn’t face a break point, as he continues his quest for a third Shanghai Masters championship.

“I focused and had good energy, because sometimes, you know, when you travel around the globe, you’re missing a bit of energy,” Federer said (h/t ESPN). “Those first few games or matches can be sometimes a bit tricky.

“I think [my] serve was solid. I was hitting my spots and really was never in trouble there.”

Federer and Ramos-Vinolas have history, as the two faced off during the 2015 Shanghai Masters with Ramos-Vinolas pulling the upset victory in a match that still sits with Federer nearly four years later.

“All the time,” Federer said. “The truth, yeah, I was thinking about it. Watched highlights. Remember how it felt. I had my chances. I won many more points that time than I lost, so I should have actually won that match.”

Russian Daniil Medvedev was also victorious as he beat British Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-1 in 54 minutes.

“I’m really happy with my performance, really happy with the score and am really looking forward to the next round,” Medvedev said. “It was my first match here in Shanghai after having a few weeks off, so I was a little bit stressed about how my level would be.

“I managed to get out of there in less than an hour.”

The win continues an impressive streak for Medvedev, who has reached the final of the last five tournaments he’s played in.
