SIX PACKS ON ICE, AHL BLOG: Season All-Stars Announced

Yesterday the American Hockey League announced this year’s All-Star Teams. League All-Stars are the top players of the year in their positions. The voting for the teams is done by AHL coaches, players and media in each of the league’s 30 teams.

The 2013-14 AHL First All-Star Team goalie is Jake Allen of the Chicago Wolves. Allen made the All-Rookie Team last season and has a record of 30-16-3 this season with the Wolves. Allen was also selected back in February to represent the Wolves in the 2014 AHL All-Star Classic.

For defense, and no surprise to anyone, is Toronto Marlies defensemen T.J. Brennan. Brennan has been a standout this season in the AHL with 22 goals thus far, more than any other defenseman in the league since the 2002-03 season. Along with 22 goals, Brennan has registered 44 assists making eighth overall in the league for scoring.

Also on defense is Rockfords Adam Clendening. Making the leap from Second Team All-Star last season, Clendening became the first AHL defenseman to make a postseason All-Star Team in each of his first two pro seasons since Dan Boyle in 1999 and 2000. Clendening currently has 56 points in 70 games played with 12 goals and 44 assists.

At left wing is Mike Hoffman of the Binghamton Senators. Hoffman was recalled by the Ottawa Senators back in late February, where he has remained ever since. Despite his recall, Hoffman is still ranked sixth overall in the league for scoring with 30 goals and 37 assist in 51 games played. Of his 51 games, 19 of them were multi-point games, one of which was a four-goal game in late January against the Worcester Sharks.

At center is Travis Morin of the Texas Stars. Morin is no rookie to the AHL, but in his seventh season he is having a career year. Morin currently leads the league in points with 81, 31 goals and 50 assists in just 62 games. Morin earned the CCM/AHL Player of the Month twice this season in October and January.

Alongside Moring is teammate Colton Sceviour at right wing. Sceviour has also had a breakout season and for most of the season battled with Morin for the top spot in league scoring. In 54 games played this season, Sceviour notched 63 points, 32 goals and 31 assists. Mike Hoffman, Sceviour has been called up with the Dallas Stars since the beginning of March but still remains in the tenth spot in the AHL for scoring.

The 2013-14 AHL Second All-Star Team is as follows:

Goalie– Petr Mrazek, Grand Rapids Griffins

Defense– Adam Almquist, Grand Rapids Griffins

Defense– Brad Hunt, Oklahoma City Barons

Left Wing– Zach Boychuk, Charlotte Checkers

Center– Andy Miele, Portland Pirates

Right Wing– Spencer Abbott, Toronto Marlies

The 2013-14 AHL All-Rookie Team is as follows:

Goalie– Joni Ortio, Abbotsford Heat

Defense– Brenden Kichton, St. John’s IceCaps

Defense– Ryan Sproul, Grand Rapids Griffins

Froward– Curtis McKenzie, Texas Stars

Forward– Teemu Pulkkinen, Grand Rapids Griffins

Froward– Ryan Strome, Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Don’t forget, the AHL playoffs kick off April 21. Who do you think will take home the Calder Cup this year?
