Six Packs On Ice, ECHL Edition: Fort Wayne Komets’ Goalie Situation

Ok, I had some people email and message me asking my opinion on the current goalie situation with the Fort Wayne Komets. So here we go……

Usually at the beginning of each season, the Komets sign two to three goaltenders. At the beginning of this season, Komets had signed John Muse and Cody Reichard. Since the season opened October 19, they are on their EIGHTH goalie.

No, that was not a typo. They are actually on their eighth goalie. Fort Wayne has released some, and others some have been called up to the AHL. Another, Ben Meisner, became ill on the ice during a game and had to be relieved.

Since there are too many to run through, I am going to make it easy and go through their current goaltenders. Yeah, I could let everyone know my favorite goalie *cough*Effinger*cough* or add in my least favorite (yeah, THAT one), but these guys are unique in their own ways. Can you imagine the pressure Grogan felt when he played in front of the die-hard Komets fans? You have to give him credit — with the right training, he could make a great goalie one day. I still miss Nick Boucher. You never knew what he was going to do during the game (remember the fight?).

The 3 Goalies currently listed on the Komets Roster are:
1.) Matt Grogan. The “Newbie”. He signed with the Komets on 3/21 after Ben Meisner suddenly became ill during a game 3/19 in the middle of the second period. His first game was the same day he was signed against Gwinnett. Matt had 23 saves for a 2-1 win. His official professional win was on 3/22 against Kalamazoo. Matt had 30 saves in regulation and OT. He then stopped all six shooters in the shootout to give the Komets the 4-3 win.
2.) Ben Meisner. Currently ranked 10th in the ECHL and fifth in the Eastern Conference. The Komets acquired him from Utah by trade 12/26. He was Goaltender of the Week for the week that ends on 2/23/14. Meisner has played in 32 games with 1,793 minutes.
3.) Max Strang. He started the 2013-14 season with the Komets during their training camp. He was released and went to Bloomington of the SPHL. He was then called back to the Komets 1/10. Max made his first Fort Wayne start on 1/15 and was released (yes, again!) on 1/18. On March 25, he agreed to terms and was re-added to the Fort Wayne roster 3/25.

Can you name ALL the goalies the Komets have used?

Okay, Okay you twisted my arm! The eight goalies were/are: Kevin Murdock, Ben Meisner, John Muse, Andrey Makarov, Max Strang (a few times), Matt Grogan, Cody Reichard, and (finally) Larkin Saalfrank

What do you think of the Fort Wayne Komets and the goalies?
