SPORTS BABE OF THE DAY: Lindsey Thiry, FOX Sports NEXT Reporter

SPORTS BABE OF THE DAY: Lindsey Thiry, FOX Sports NEXT Reporter @LindseyThiry

I was so excited when I got the opportunity to interview Lindsey Thiry from FOX Sports NEXT. The Renton, Washington native currently resides in Los Angeles, California and is in her first year as a USC Beat Reporter and a Field Reporter. While attending the University of Washington, she was a member of the Women’s National Volleyball team. In 2010, the volleyball team was inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame. Lindsey was a three-year letterwinner at Seattle Prep and led her team to two state titles in 2003 and 2004. As if that weren’t enough, this Sports Star Spotlight was also on the Dean’s List and was a Children’s Hospital Volunteer (brains AND beauty! We’re in love!) Lindsey started her career in Great Falls, MT as a sports anchor for a local ABC-affiliate. She graduated with a degree in communications from the University of Washington. Lindsey was a reporter and host for the Atlanta Falcons on AtlantaFalcons.com and now she is a reporter on FOX Sports NEXT.

1. Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day. Do you eat breakfast every morning?
I don’t! I’ve never been a big breakfast person. I always have coffee. Sometimes I make eggs in the morning if I’m not pressed for time to get to work.

2. Do you have a quote or motto that you live by?
You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. – Wayne Gretzky. This is a great reminder to always go for your goals, because the worst that can happen is you don’t make it. If you don’t go for goals, you’ll never know if you could’ve made them.
Also, I try to always remember to treat others the way I want to be treated. This is so important, especially in the day and age of social media.

3. How did you decide that you wanted to become a reporter?
When I was young I used to watch TGIF with my family on Friday nights and loved to watch 20/20 afterwards even more. I found myself watching the local news when I was little. Then, I fell in love with watching the ABC’s Wide World of Sports and then the Olympics coverage every two years. It was the story behind each athlete that I really captivated me and made me want to become a sports reporter.

4. How do you want to be remembered?
It’s always been and always will be really important to me to be known as a hard worker.

5. If you could be the head coach of a team for one year, what team would you choose?
The Seattle Seahawks. Wouldn’t that be awesome to run out of the tunnel every Sunday to the noise in Century Link? But I think I’ll leave that job to Pete Carroll. He seems to be doing pretty well.

6. If you could pick the next Sports Babe of The Day, who would you like it to be?
Any of my FOX Sports / Scout co-workers. They are all fantastic reporters who are even better people.

7. If you have a nickname, what is it?
LT

8. If you were stranded on a deserted island, who or what would you like to have with you?
Sriracha sauce.

9. If you won one million dollars what would you do with it?
Put it in the bank.

10. Out of all the places that you have been, which has been your favorite and why?
I was fortunate enough to live in Rome, Italy for a few months my senior year of college. I’d go back in a heartbeat and look forward to the day I get to.

11. What do you like to do in your off time, away from reporting?
Off time? What’s that?!
Sometimes, I put my phone down to play beach volleyball.

12. What is satisfying about what you do?
Everything. I love my job. Even though the hours get crazy and days off are few and far between, it is beyond satisfying to be able to be a sports reporter for a living.

13. What is something that you have to do either before or after an interview?
Research — which means everyday being on top of the latest on what’s going on around the beat I’m covering. You never want to be behind or ask someone a question that’s irrelevant to the day’s events or situation.

14. What is the best compliment you have got and who was it from?
Probably one of the biggest compliments I’ve received was when a veteran journalist in the press box came to ask my opinion on a current situation. It meant a lot he thought enough of my work on the beat to know my opinion.

15. When you played on the Volleyball team at the University of Washington, what was your most proud/memorable moment?
Well, I was a proud benchwarmer on the team that won the 2005 National Championship. I’ll never forget my teammate, All-American Sanja Tomasevic, after we won. She came to me and said “LT, you have no idea how much you helped by serving your hardest at me everyday line to line.” It was just an awesome moment to know it really was a team effort and that she took a moment of her time to let me know that.

16. Who has been your favorite person to interview so far in your career?
Ken Griffey Jr. I don’t really ‘idolize’ players or coaches – but growing up in Seattle, Ken Griffey Jr. was the man. So when I got to interview him as an intern at Fox Sports Northwest, it was a dream come true. He’s as awesome as a little kid would hope.

17. Who is someone you consider to be a mentor?
Curtis Wilson, a producer at ROOT Sports NW. I interned for Curtis when I got my start in this business and he’s always provided positive encouragement, support, and isn’t afraid to give the tough advice.

18. Who is someone you hope to interview in the future?
Gregg Popovich. Have you seen his halftime interviews?

19. What is something that people would be shocked to know about you?
If I weren’t a sports reporter I’d like to be in law enforcement.
