20 Questions with Brett Lawrie

SPORTS BABE OF THE DAY: Brett Lawrie, 3rd Base, Toronto Blue Jays1. How old were you when you started playing baseball? Did you play any other sports growing up?
I started playing baseball around 5-6 years old…I had always been throwing things around and stuff leading up to that. I also played AAA basketball in high school and 4th in the province one year, played soccer until I was 17 and chose baseball over that, believe it or not. And, I played golf as well. I believe playing all these sports has made me a better athlete and baseball player.

2. Who or what inspired you to pursue your dream of becoming a professional baseball player?
I always wanted to play pro baseball, ever since I was very young. I’d always be watching highlights at night, hoping that one day I would get that opportunity…always had a love for the game.

3. Being that you’re from Canada, did you grow up hoping to play for a team in Canada, or what team was your favorite growing up?
I always just wanted to just make it to the big leagues and it didn’t matter what team. As long as I got my opportunity and it ended up in my favor, I guess u could say. It’s definitely a nice feather in my cap at the end of the day.

4. How does it feel to represent Canada in a primarily American league, especially at fairly young age?
It’s a tremendous honor, and I do it with pride. It’s a war in the AL East and I enjoy going against the best.

5.What, if any, obstacles have you had to overcome in your career?
There’s been so many because this is a game of failure. There are a lot of baseball lessons and life lessons I’ve learned…playing has helped me grow as a man and mature even more as a baseball player. I’ve had to overcome injuries and battled to get back to full strength, but these are things that are normal, just part of the game. You just have to grind it out and suck it up and find positivity somehow.

6. If you have one, what’s your favorite away stadium to play at?
I love playing at Yankee stadium. New york is a city full of opportunities…there’s so much history within the city, as well as so many legends that are apart of baseball history that have played there and that’s special, I respect that. Every time I get a chance to lace them up in Yankee stadium it’s a treat and it pumps me up.

7. A lot of pro athletes have a specific routine they follow on game days. Do you have a routine you follow? What about your go-to pregame meal?
I keep things pretty light…I sleep in on night games, head to the park and have a hot tub pre-game, listen to music, watch some video on baseball, things like that. There’s new stuff every day, so I mix and match and don’t have a set menu.

8. How about your walk up music…What goes into your choice of song? Will you be switching up your walk up song this year?
I usually switch it up, I’ll have some sort of house music…can’t say which one yet though!SPORTS BABE OF THE DAY: Brett Lawrie, 3rd Base, Toronto Blue Jays

9. Athletic talent clearly runs in your family, as your sister Danielle is a professional softball pitcher. Did you two practice a lot together growing up?
Yes, she and I did a lot of that growing up. My dad would take us to the park and we would do ground balls, throwing, running, hitting…we did this a lot while we were growing up.

10. Danielle recently had her first baby…what’s it been like being an uncle so far?
It’s been amazing actually. I saw her when she was really little, but I will get to see her soon and she’ll have gotten bigger so I’m excited.

11. On a different note, we know that you have a ton of Beats by Dre headphones…are they something you collect, or what is it you like about them?
Yea I love the product and what it represents. I love how it’s rep’d by a lot of athletes, and I love the look and of course the sound. There’s nothing like ‘em! I try to get my hands on as many as I can.

12. Related to the headphones, you’re always tweeting about music. What are the top 5 songs on your playlist right now, or the top 5 songs that get you most pumped up?
I’ve been listening to Drake, SHM, Hardwell, Wiz Khalifa, Florida Georgia Line…

13. Let’s talk about your tattoos…you have quite a few! Do you have a favorite?
I enjoy my tattoos equally, and they all mean a lot to me in different ways. Because of that it’s hard for me to say that one is better than the other.
