Chow needs to bring FBS style Spring Game to Hawaii

0
Norm Chow has done nothing but big things since his hire as University of Hawaii Football coach in late December.  One of the more noticeable changes has been the up-tempo style practice.  No longer do players go through slow motion or do drills at half speed.  That is out of the question.  You will practice hard or not practice at all.  The added discipline is expected to pay off dividends once the season starts in the fall.

Along with the pro-style practices, Norm Chow needs to bring a real spring game to the University of Hawaii.  I cannot remember the last time the Warriors had a real spring game.  Under June Jones and Greg McMackin, Hawaii’s spring game was nothing more than a glorified scrimmage.  There was not much hitting and the top players were held out making it hard to get a good read on the team.   Now is the time to change this.  If Hawaii wants to be considered big time, it needs to act like it.  Look at schools like Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma and LSU.  These schools hold real spring games.  These games are often picked up by national television networks like ESPN.  Fans tailgate at these events like they are real games.  Getting 100,000 fans to attend these events are not unrealistic.  I think it is time Hawaii does this.

They should have the game on the last Saturday of April at 6 pm.  Treat it as a real game.  Have the UH channel (OC Sports) televise the game live.  Let fans tailgate in the parking lots leading up to the game.  This should draw a lot of fan interest.  As it is, the excitement of Warrior nation is at an all time high with Norm Chow at the helm.  Now lets tap into that excitement.  Who knows.  This could result in 40-50,ooo fans at Aloha Stadium eager to get a taste of the 2012 Warriors.

First Season in Mountain West will be a tough one for Hawaii

1
Make no mistake about it, Norm Chow’s hire has brought a new found enthusiasm to the Warrior football program that has been absent since June Jones left the UH to take the Southern Methodist job in 2008.  I expect this team to be much improved from a discipline and coaching standpoint in 2012 but the schedule will make the season a daunting task nonetheless.  Not only the tough schedule but the change in scheme will take some time for the players to adjust to as well.  Hawaii has been running the run and shoot offense since 1999 and even ran a version of it in the post June Jones era.  From a personnel standpoint, Hawaii is still has a run and shoot team and it will be a process in getting this team from a personnel standpoint to run Norm’s pro-style offense at a high level.  I think Hawaii still has the ability to surprise some teams in 2012 and by seasons end could be a very dangerous team that no one will want to play in a bowl game.  Here’s the Hawaii Warriors 2012 schedule and my game by game predictions with spring ball already having begun.

9/1/12 @Southern California- With a new scheme in place and considering the trojans are poised to be a preseason top 10 team, this is not the game Hawaii needed to start off its 2012 campaign with.  Still this will be an intruguing matchup with Norm Chow going up against his former team.  I look for Hawaii to struggle offensively for the first month or so of the season as it makes the adjustment to the pro-style offense.  With that said, here is my prediction:

Hawaii 17

USC 38

9/15/12 Lamar- This is the game that would have been perfect as the season opener for the Warriors heading into the Norm Chow era. This will be a game where this offense will have a chance to make some big plays and gain some confidence early in the season.  Lamar is a decent FCS team but will have its work cut out for themselves making the trek from Texas to Aloha Stadium to take on the Warriors.  Here is my prediction:

Lamar 14

Hawaii 38

9/22/12 Nevada- The Warriors will open their inaugural season in the Mountain West against the defending Western Athletic Conference champion Nevada Wolfpack.  The pack had a lot of question marks heading into their 2011 season after their best quarterback in program history, Colin Kaepernick, completed his eligibility and is now a member of the San Francisco 49′ers.  Nevada thinks they found the air apparent in sophomore signal caller Cody Fajardo who is coming off a solid 2011 campeign.  Nevada still has never won in Honolulu and even their best team in program history lost at Hawaii in 2010 (21-27.)  Hawaii will be a confident team coming off their win against Lamar but Nevada is a much tougher team.  With that said, here is my prediction:

Nevada 21

Hawaii 28

9/29/12 @BYU- The cougars are coming off a big bowl win against Tulsa in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces bowl.  Their final regular season game in 2011 was at Aloha Stadium against Hawaii and the cougars were able to come back from a 13-7 halftime deficit and beat the Warriors 41-20.  The Warriors will have to travel to Provo this season for a return non-conference game.  Hawaii has not fared very well against the cougs in Provo but will try to buck that trend.  This will be another homecoming of sorts for Norm Chow as he goes up against his former team.  Here is my prediction:

Hawaii 16

BYU 35

10/6/12 @San Diego State- Things do not get any easier for Hawaii as they have to travel to play the Aztecs in San Diego after a most likely tough game in Provo against BYU.  San Diego State will be an upper echelon Mountain West team and will be tough to beat at home.  Here is my prediction:

Hawaii 24

San Diego St. 31

10/13/12 New Mexico- The Lobos will be just what the doctor ordered after a long and arduous road trip for the Hawaii Warriors.  New Mexico has been a bottom feeder in the Mountain West for the past several seasons.  It has also been one of the ten worst programs in the country.  This could be Hawaii’s coming out party at home.  Here’s my prediction:

New Mexico 10

Hawaii 44

10/27/12 @Colorado State- Fort Collins, Colorado was never an easy place for Hawaii to travel to and play in the old WAC.  A decade later, the status quo remains.  The only difference is, Hawaii has a better program.  Still, playing in altitude has always been an issue for the Warriors.  Here is my prediction:

Hawaii 21

Colorado St. 17

11/3/12 @Fresno State- The Warriors have two back to back road games on their schedule unlike most teams in the nation.  It’s tough enough the Warriors have to travel all the way across the Pacific Ocean to play their road games but the Mountain West conference apparently does not care.  The Warriors and Bulldogs will meet, as rivals, for the first time in the MWC.  Bulldog stadium will be the location of the first meeting in the conference.  Hawaii has won the last three match-ups between the teams in Bulldog Stadium (2006 W 68-37, 2008 W 32-29 OT, 2010 W 49-27.)  The strange thing is most of these games are close in Honolulu but it has been the complete opposite in Fresno.  Here is my prediction:

Hawaii 30

Fresno St. 28

11/10/12 Boise State- After a one year hiatus, the Warriors and Broncos will meet in BSU’s final season in the MWC.  Boise State will be leaving for the Big East starting in the 2013 season.  These two teams have played some great games over the years particularly in Honolulu.  The Broncos have developed into a national power and the Warriors were on their way until June Jones left after the 2008 Sugar Bowl.  Norm Chow looks to get Hawaii back while the Broncos are already a national mainstay.  Boise State may be a bit vulnerable after the loss of dynamic quarterback Kellen Moore but they have enough talent waiting in the wings to still be more than formidable.  Here is my prediction:

Boise St. 34

Hawaii 21

11/17/12 @Air Force- Hawaii fans have to be saying sheesh.  This is another example of the MWC saying “welcome to our conference” sending the Warriors to Colorado Springs, Colorado in mid-November.  Hawaii could play it’s first game in the snow in a long time.  Combine that with the fact that Air Force has a pretty good program and this could turn out to be a very difficult game for Norm Chow’s Warriors.  Here is my prediction:

Hawaii 17

Air Force 27

11/24/12 UNLV- The Warriors will have revenge on their minds.  UNLV has become Hawaii’s whipping boys in recent seasons but in a non-conference match-up between the two in September of 2011, the Rebels turned the tide.  The heavy favored Warriors lost in stunning fashion as the Greg McMackin coached Warriors started slow and finished even slower losing, 40-20 to the Rebels in Las Vegas.  The Warriors will look to remind the Rebles who the better program is in this first MWC meeting between the two schools.  Here’s my prediction:

UNLV 13

Hawaii 38

12/2/12 South Alabama- The Jaguars of the FCS will be transitioning to the FBS in 2012.  Because of this, this game will be considered an FBS game that will count towards bowl eligibility for the Warriors if they can win.  Here’s my prediction:

South Alabama 7

Hawaii 45

2012 overall record: 7-5 (5-3 MWC)

I see Norm Chow’s first season being a success as he will transition a team from a 4 wide offense to a more traditional pro-style offense and go up against a tough schedule and still manage to get the Warriors to a bowl game.  Norm will have Warriors fans extremely excited about Hawaii football again heading into the off-season.  I look for the Warriors to be much improved in 2013.  2013 will be Norm’s payoff year.  Give Chow a full season to recruit and he will have this program back on the map in no time.  I see the Warriors competing for an MWC title and double digit season in 2013.

Norm Chow needs Hawaii, Hawaii needs Norm Chow

1
The University of Hawaii’s hiring of Norm Chow has seemed to have work out for both parties so far.  The excitement for the football program is at an all-time high.  Despite the 2012 season being several months away, season ticket prices have gone through the roof.  Recruiting has taken off so far as several of Hawaii’s top recruits have either shown serious interest in the program or have given verbal commitments for the 2012 season.  Norm Chow has already said that he will visit every top prospect in the state of Hawaii and he has liven up to that promise.  This excitement with the Warrior football program could not have come at a better time.  I still consider Hawaii a top notch mid-major program but it was evident, this past season, that Hawaii stock was dropping not only from a local perspective but nationally as well.  It was time to make a change and I think Jim Donovan made the right decision at the right time.  After all, the Mountain West Conference is looming in 2012.  With the conference expansion era in college football in full effect, Hawaii needs to make sure they continue to improve from a football aspect as well as a marketing aspect.  Making the move to the MWC is a good first step but even the MWC is not as stable as it once was.  The conference has already lost Utah and will lose TCU this coming season.  Boise State will leave for the Big East in 2013 as well as San Diego State.  If the MWC because the WAC 2.0, Hawaii needs to make sure they are good enough to get a look from the Big East or even the Pac-12/14/16.

I think Hawaii has a chance to be good right away under Norm Chow.  This is not something that should be a long rebuilding process.  Hawaii is just one season removed from winning 10 games, a WAC title and earning a Hawaii bowl appearence and only 4 from an undefeated regular season and BCS bowl birth.  Hawaii went 6-7 in 2011 but lost 3 games by 8 points or less.  Not to mention that Hawaii is a much better program than UNLV but got blasted by 20 points.  Hawaii led BYU by 6 points at the half but went on to lose by 3 touchdowns.  In retrospect, this team could have easily won 9-10 games again despite losing key players on offense to the NFL (RB Alex Green, SB Greg Salas, SB Kealoha Pilares, WR Rodney Bradley.)  What will be tough in 2012 is not only an upgrade in the conference schedule but the non-conference as well.  Hawaii will start the season with back to back games on the road at USC and at BYU.  I cannot remember the last time in UH history that has happened.  I expect this Hawaii team to be very competitive though.  A top 3 finish in the MWC is very possible and winning 8-9 games even with the tough schedule is realistic.

Hawaii will be running a more balanced offensive attack but has the pieces to be a top notch offense once again.  Norm Chow will have a stable of running backs to throw at opposing defenses.  Running backs Joey Iosefa and Sterling Jackson have already proved to be an effective 1-2 punch and redshirt freshman Will Gregory has the talent to be a 4 year starter.  The receiving corps is in good shape, too.  Billy-Ray Stutzmann proved to be one of the top pass catchers in the WAC and still has 2 more seasons of eligibility.  Possession receiver Miah Ostrowski is back for his senior year and Trevor Davis has a chance to be a special receiver for this program.  Darius Bright will be, hopefully, healthy for the first time in his career and could have a breakout senior year whether he stays at wideout or makes the move to tight end.  JC redshirts that transfered, Cecil Doe and Chris Gant have homerun ability as well.  I see Norm Chow doing wonders with this offense.  It should be one of the tops in the Mountain West Conference.

I think 2012 could be somewhat of a re-birth for Norm Chow in the college football world.  He may be 65 but I think getting his dream job at the University of Hawaii (his first head coaching gig) has taken some taken some years off of him.  He always seemed to be a laid back type of guy but has shown a youthful exuberance during his press-conferences in Manoa.  I truly believe that both parties need each other in this situation and it could turn out to work wonders for both Norm Chow’s coaching career as well as the Hawaii Warrior football program.

My personal favorite top 5 candidates to replace Mack

0
My opinion is irrelevant, obviously, but I was just thinking about who I would like to see take over the Warrior program.  These are just my personal favorites.  I have complete confidence in Jim Donovan and company that they will hire the right guy that will help take Hawaii Warrior football to new heights.  Here are my top 5 candidates:

1. June Jones; Head Coach, Southern Methodist- most think it’s unrealistic to think of Jones coming back especially after his departure from the program after the ’08 Sugar Bowl.  This may not be as far fetched as some say.  Rumor has it that Jones is no longer interested in the Arizona State job.  ASU offered Jones, a $4 million contract.  We all know Jones is not all about the money.  He turned down $2 from the San Diego Chargers in 1999 and accepted scraps to become Hawaii’s head coach.  The way I see it is he left UH in 2008 because the higher ups in the University did not see things the way Jones did.  June wanted a bigger recruited budget so he could go after top recruits and wanted an upgrade of facilities.  Hawaii will never have the athletic budget or facilities as the Alabama’s, Miami’s and UCS’s of the college football world but an upgrade was, no doubt, needed.  June left knowing that, that in itself (Jones leaving), would wake up the higher ups of the University and political leaders of the state of Hawaii to better support the states top University.  That has turned out as a successful.  Mack had a better recruiting budget to work with and better facilities to sell as a recruiting tool.  Mack also had the luxury of a sane, proactive boss with a vision to take UH athletics to another level; that being Jim Donovan of course.  Mr. Donovan has done just that.  He has gotten this program out of the mediocre WAC and has moved them up to the Mountain West Conference.  We all know June Jones loves the state of Hawaii and he has always said that he wants to eventually come back to Hawaii to retire.  Why not another coaching go around before his retirement?

2. Mark Helfrich; Offensive Coordinator, University of Oregon- Helfrich is known as the mastermind behind Oregon’s high powered offensive attack.  Several schools including Arizona State are interested in Helfrich as a head coaching candidate.  I think Hawaii should give him a call.  Hawaii has the talent at receiver, running back and o-line to run this offense successfully right off the bat.  He is one of the hottest coaching candidates in the nation and would fit in well at UH.

3. Rich Miano; associate head coach, University of Hawaii- He was given the interim tag but if he is ultimately named the official head coach, that would not be a bad thing for Hawaii.  Miano is known as a solid recruiter and has a lot of connections with the NFL.  He would also bring stability.  He would keep the current assistant coaches and a lot of the current players would stay on board.  Being a local, Miano also has a great relationship with most, if not, all of Hawaii’s high school coaches.

4. Nick Rolovich; offensive coordinator, University of Hawaii- I have always considered Rolovich as a young June Jones.  The way he carries himself on the Hawaii sidelines and interacts with his quarterback reminds me a lot of the former Warrior head man.  If he was named the new coach and was given complete reign of the offense without anyone wispering in his ear, he has the potential to be one of the best offensive minds in college football for a long time.

5. Dan Morrison; quarterbacks coach, Southern Methodist University- Morrison was the former QB’s coach at Hawaii under Jones and is one of the best run and shoot minds in the game.  He would be able to keep the status quo of Hawaii’s offense.

Thank you Coach Mack

1
As we all learned a few hours ago, Greg McMackin resigned after 4 seasons as head football coach at the University of Hawaii.  Hawaii’s subpar 2011 campaign contributed to this.  Hawaii had high expectations heading into this season after going 10-4 and winning a co-WAC title in 2010.  Hawaii was the 2011 pre-season WAC favorite and predicted to dominate with Boise State already gone to the Mountain West Conference.  Things started off on a good note in conference play as Hawaii beat Louisiana Tech in Ruston, 44-26.  Things went down hill from there.  The Warriors would suffer a slew of injuries, which would ultimately be too much to overcome.  Hawaii lost 2 receivers to season ending injuries along with their all-everything quarterback Bryant Moniz.  I feel bad for Greg McMackin because I don’t think all of Hawaii’s problems were his fault.  The bottom line is, this program is at the point where it should be competing for WAC titles every season and getting double digit wins.  Hawaii had the easiest schedule of all 120 FBS teams but could only accumulate a 6-7 record, which was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak.  Like I said, injuries were the main factor for Hawaii’s 2011 struggles but the head coach always gets the bulk of the blame.  Now Hawaii has to move forward.  The UH Athletic Department has already posted the UH Head Football coaching job opening online.  It will be interesting to see who applies for this job.  This is a good job.  Hawaii has a good program and who would not want to coach in Hawaii?  As for now, UH athletic director Jim Donovan named long time assistant Rich Miano as the interim head coach.  Miano will be in charge of recruiting and everything else while the search for a new head coach takes place.  Once again, many mahalo’s to Greg McMackin for all that he has done for the Hawaii Warrior football program.  He was a class act and proved that several times throughout his coaching career at UH.  His players did phenominal in the classroom and he ran the program the right way.  A sure sign of his class?  McMackin resigned and will take less money from the school instead of forcing the AD to fire him so he could receive more money.  The man put this program ahead of himself.  May God bless Coach Mack and his family in their future endeavors.  McMackin went 29-25 with two bowl appearences (0-2) in four seasons at UH.

Apologies….

0
I just wanted to let everyone know that I am still a member of sportsrantz and there is a reason why I am not blogging as much as I used to.  Within the last month and a half I landed a fulltime job.  The job is a blessing but it takes up most of my time during the day.  I wish I had the time to do blog posts everyday and maybe call into sportsrantz radio every now and then but I simply do not have the time.  Hopefully, in the near future I’ll have more time to do these things.  I enjoy writing.  It is one of my passions and God given talents.  I thank Anthony DiMoro for giving me the platform to market my talents.  I appreciate it Anthony.  You did a wonderful job putting my blog together and I am very grateful.  Hope everyone is doing well.  Now I will give a brief rundown of the current status of the Hawaii Warrior football team.

The Hawaii Warriors are 6-6 after their 35-23 win over Tulane.  The win snapped a 3 game skid and gives the Warriors hope for qualifying for the Christmas Eve Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.  Hawaii now has to beat a solid 8-3 BYU team to become bowl eligible.  BYU is a good football team but is by no stretch of imagination an unbeatable team.  If Hawaii brings their A game and does not suffer anymore setbacks in the injury department, they have a good chance at pulling the upset.  The game will be this Saturday at 2:30 pm hst; 8:30 pm est live on ESPN.  I am looking forward to a breakout performance from this young team in front of a national audience.

Many Warrior fans are upset because of Hawaii’s 6-6 record and they have good reason to be but lets be real here.  The reason Hawaii is 6-6 is because of injuries to key players especially on offense.  Receivers Royce Pollard, Miah Ostrwoski, Justin Clapp, Allen Sampson, Samson Anguay and Darius Bright have been slowed down all season because of various ailments.  Clapp and Sampson are both out for the season.  Starting senior quarterback and heisman hoepful Bryant Moniz broke his ankle against Nevada a few weeks ago and is out for the season.  These are just a few of the injuries.  I am not even mentioning all the yards and touchdowns Hawaii lost from last season.  Hawaii lost 3 key offensive players from last season (4 altogether) and all of them combined for over 5,000+ total offensive yards and 50+ touchdowns.  Hawaii also had to replace all 5 starters on the offensive line.  The injuries were the straw that broke the camels back.  This is no ones fault as injuries are a part of the game.  Some teams have them more than others and unfortunately, Hawaii was one of those teams.  Being the natural optimist that I am, I look on the bright side of things.  All these injuries have forced some young players to gain some well needed experience that should bode well for the future.  True freshman wideout Trevor Davis has started the last 4 games and has played solid.  He caught his first two touchdown passes of the season against Tulane this past Saturday.  Sophomore quarterback David Graves has had his ups and downs, but mostly ups.  He  has 4 touchdown passes and 2 rushing touchdowns in the 6 quarters he played against Fresno State and Tualne.  If healthy, Graves will start against BYU and should be the favorite to start the next two seasons.  This team is loaded with good young talent.  Slotback Billy Ray-Stutzmann has emerged as a big time playmaker and has two more seasons to play.  True freshman Joey Iosefa has proved to be one of the top backs in the WAC.  He will be a 4 years starter for this team.  The Warriors took their lumps this season but the future is looking real good especially with this program moving up in the college football world.  Hawaii will no longer be a part of a conference that settled for mediocrity.  They will be making the jump up to the Mountain West Confernce, which is run much more efficiently than the WAC.

Hawaii Warriors at Idaho Vandals Game Preview

0
Check out my latest article posted at yahoo contributor:

The Hawaii Warriors come into Moscow, Idaho feeling confident after their 11 point win over the New Mexico State Aggies this past Saturday. The Warriors may be confident but they’re back on the road again. They have been on the road a lot. 4 out of their first 7 games have been on the continent. What’s more, it seems like every team Hawaii has played had an extra week to prepare for the Warriors. Louisiana Tech had an extra week to prepare for Hawaii but that did not amount to much as the Warriors won by 18 points. Hawaii has already played two back to back road games……………… Read more here ———-> http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/9084815/hawaii_warriors_at_idaho_vandals_game.html?cat=14

Warriors Run Over Aggies

0
Check out my latest yahoo article right here:

The Hawaii Warriors once again proved that home is where the heart is. They were energized by the home atmosphere and put their past road struggles behind them. They knew this was a must win if they wanted to keep their goals a head of them. Beat the Aggies and their WAC title hopes and bowl aspirations would still be in place. That would be exactly what the warriors would do.

Spartans Special Teams Stun Warriors

0
Check out my latest article that was published on the Yahoo Contributor Network:

The last Western Athletic Conference match up between Hawaii and San Jose State was all as advertised. As it always seems to happen, this game came down to the last possession. The previous two games of this series in San Jose had gone into overtime with Hawaii winning both by a touchdown. This game did not go into overtime but still will go down as one of the most entertaining game of this long series.

It was a defensive struggle for the first few offensive series as both teams swapped punts. Hawaii ended up striking first late in the first quarter via a 16 yard pass from Bryant Moniz to Royce Pollard. Pollard continued his hot streak. He has caught at least 1 touchdown pass in each of the last 3 games. What is more, Pollard has 28 receptions in the last 3 games and 8 of those receptions have been in the end zone. San Jose State proved to the warriors that they would be in for a battle. They answered Hawaii’s score with a 20 yard touchdown of the passing variety from Matt Faulkner to Chandler Jones. The warriors went three and out on their next possession………. read more here  ——>http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/9048959/spartans_special_teams_stun_warriors.html?cat=14
